A Blog About Why Every Home, School and Workplace Needs A Defibrillator

Why do we need AEDs?

Why do we need AEDs (automated external defibrillators)? It’s a simple answer — because they save lives. Why do most people with heart conditions die? Because they don’t receive the help they need in time. AEDs are lifesaving machines which can be used to help treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). People suffering from SCA don't usually have time to reach the hospital, and so AEDs are designed to give them a fighting chance at survival. There should be one in every place where someone could suffer from a cardiac arrest, including:

  • Schools,

  • Homes,

  • Airports,

  • Fitness facilities;

  • Sports arenas;

  • Hotels; and

  • Workplaces.

In fact there should be an AED in every location where a person could suffer a cardiac arrest, which is anywhere and everywhere.

When Should An AED Be Used?

When should an AED be used? It all depends on if the patient is experiencing a cardiac arrest or not. If the patient is having a cardiac arrest, time is of the essence. And an AED should be used as soon as possible. Every second counts when someone's life is at stake. A properly placed AED will be within a 3 minute walk of heavily trafficked areas.

If you're in a public place and you see someone collapse, it's your responsibility to do everything you can to help them out. From there, the application of an AED isn't that complicated, and chances are the device will do most of the work for you. Even if someone isn't trained, it can be life-saving. In other words, next time you see someone collapse in public, don't hesitate: your actions could save their life.

AEDs Save Lives

An AED is a device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) that cause sudden cardiac arrest and helps deliver an electric shock to the chest to restore normal heart rhythm. When used properly, AEDs save lives.

Thanks to public awareness, AEDs are becoming more commonplace in public places like schools, stadiums and shopping centers. These initiatives demonstrate the importance of taking action to ensure that you, or another bystander, is prepared to help during an emergency event.
